Sarnia

Sarnia is located on the shores of the busiest section of the St. Lawrence Seaway System where the St. Clair River joins Lake Huron and right across the river from Port Huron, Michigan. With a population of over 72,300, Sarnia is the largest city in Lambton County.

Sarnia and the surrounding area of Lambton County are known as Bluewater Country for the azure blue waters of its lakes and rivers. Equally, it is the home of North America’s oil industry and has deep roots in refining and chemical productions, automotive, manufacturing, metal fabrication, and engineering. However, Sarnia is also becoming known around the world as a centre for bioindustrial manufacturing and research and development.

Public Transit

Sarnia Transit is responsible for public bus transit service within the City of Sarnia, as well as within the nearby village of Pointe Edward. All 25 Sarnia Transit buses are wheelchair accessible and are equipped with a bike rack which can hold two conventional bicycles.

Transit tickets are available from a number of different locations including at the Sarnia Transit office at 1169 Michener Rd.

For those who are unable to use regular Transit service due to a physical disability, Care-a-Van provides local public transportation in the Sarnia and Point Edward areas. The Care-a-Van service provides accessible door to door transportation using lift equipped vehicles for those who require and are registered for the service.

Trains & Busses

Sarnia has one of the two VIA Rail passenger terminals in the far SouthWestern portion of Province. (Windsor has the other terminal.)

The Via Rail Station at 125 Green St. in Sarnia provides daily service from Sarnia to Toronto and return with stops in Brampton, Georgetown, Guelph, Kitchener, London, Malton, St. Marys, Stratford, Strathroy, Toronto, Wyoming.

In addition to the Via Train service, through a VIA Rail and Robert Q’s Airbus partnership there are 8 daily options for travel between Sarnia and London from Monday to Friday, and five on Saturdays and Sundays.

Roads

Highway 402 is a multiple lane highway running from the Michigan/Ontario border in the west to London and Highway 401 in the east. There are eight Highway 402 interchanges within Sarnia-Lambton.

Highway 40 runs south from Highway 402 through the Sarnia and St. Clair Township and into Chatham-Kent where it connects with Highway 401. Within Sarnia and St. Clair Township, portions of Highway 40 are four-lanes.

Highway 21 runs north from Highway 402 through the municipality of Lambton Shores where it runs parallel to the Lake Huron shoreline into Huron County and the Grey-Bruce region of Ontario.

Air

Sarnia is home to Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport at 1500 Airport Road, Sarnia. Air Canada, through Air Georgian Ltd., operates direct flights to and from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport to Sarnia. From Toronto, you can access both domestic and international flights. London International Airport is located one hour driving east of Sarnia.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport offers service to major U.S. and international destinations and is just over one hour’s drive from Sarnia. Detroit Metro Shuttle Service Inc. provides transportation services between Sarnia and Detroit Metropolitan, London and Toronto Pearson International Airports.

Robert Q Airbus also provides ground transportation services from Sarnia to London International and Toronto Pearson Airports.

Health Care in Sarnia

Residents of Sarnia have access to emergency and a host of hospital services through Bluewater Health located at 89 Norman Street, in Sarnia, and through Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital of Bluewater Health, located nearby in Petrolia at 450 Blanche Street.

The West Lambton Community Health Centre, at 429 Exmouth St, in Sarnia is a family focused family and community health facility where a variety of health professionals assess and treat non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses, as well as provide referrals to other local health services and personal development groups.

Education in Sarnia

The elementary and secondary schools needs of families with children in Sarnia are addressed through the Lambton Kent District School Board’s 12 elementary and four secondary schools in Sarnia. Through the Board, French Immersion, Extended French and Native Language programs are also available. For those wanting to send children to a Christian public education school, the St. Clair Catholic District School Board operates 20 elementary and five secondary schools in Sarnia.

Continuing education, diploma and certificate programs are available through Lambton College for those wanting to upgrade skills, start a new career or who want to pursue advancement opportunities.

Lambton College offers comprehensive programs in a wide variety of fields, including Business and Law; Health, Hospitality and Community Services; Technology and Applied Science; Applied and General Arts; Information Technology; and Business and Industry. The College offers applied-degree programs in Applied Technology, Instrumentation and Control, Applied Technology, and Environmental Health and Safety.

Sarnia-Lambton is working to capitalize on the growing need and demand for new technologies and sustainability initiatives to fuel its economy. The Centre for Advanced Process Technology and the Suncor Sustainability Centre operating from Lambton College are two initiatives that embody this new focus and collaboration with industry and business.

The Western Sarnia-Lambton Research Park, a joint initiative of the County of Lambton, the City of Sarnia, and Western University, is another example of the new types of opportunities in Sarnia.

THINGS TO DO IN THE CITY

The City of Sarnia has an active cultural scene. Take in a concert by the International Symphony Orchestra. Enjoy a performance or concert at the Lawrence House Centre for the Arts or the famed Imperial Theatre. Stroll through the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery and take in the variety of historical and contemporary exhibitions or explore the Stones ‘N Bones Museum an international collection of over 6,000 fossils, rare and remarkable gems, dinosaurs and artifacts. Plus there’s more.

Sarnia’s location on the shores of Lake Huron provides ample opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. You can go fishing, sailing, boating, or you can just relax on Canatara Beach or go for a lake swim at Kenwick Beach (a quick trip by bus or car to Brights Grove). Travel a bit farther from Sarnia (about an hour) and explore the beaches of other parts of Lambton County including Grand Bend, and the Pinery Provincial Park.

Get involved. Be active. Sarnia, offers recreational facilities such as 116 parks, golf courses, the RBC Centre, Bluewater Gymnastics Complex, Veteran’s Memorial Soccer Field, the Norm Perry Park, the Sarnia Athletic Track & Field Complex, and BMX track in Canatara Park.
