Hamilton

Hamilton with its population of almost 520,000 is a port city on the southern shores of Lake Ontario. It lies about halfway between Toronto and Niagara Falls, and less than an hour from each. The rustic beauty and lush trails of the Niagara Escarpment run through the middle of the city across its entire breadth, bisecting the city into “upper” and “lower” parts.

Hamilton continues to grow and expand its horizons, moving from predominatly a steel and textile town to its current prominence in the health, technology and engineering sectors. With a rich history and heritage, a vibrant arts and cultural scene and access to a wide range of outdoor activities, Hamilton offers renters much to see and do.

Public Transit

The Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) provides public transportation throughout the Hamilton area, offering wheel-chair accessible and air conditioned buses on most of its 26 routes. All HSR vehicles (except the Trolleys) are equipped with a bike rack on the front bumper which can hold a maximum of two bikes.

Para-Transit service in Hamilton is provided through The Disabled and Aged Regional Transportation System (D.A.R.T.S.). D.A.R.T.S. is a door to door transportation service employing wheelchair accessible buses and contracted taxi services when appropriate.

Trains & Busses

Hamilton is serviced by both GO Transit trains and buses.

The Hamilton GO Centre located at 36 Hunter St. E. provides train and/or bus service to stops along the northern shore of Lake Ontario such as Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga, Toronto, Whitby, Oshawa and as far east as Bowmanville and Newcastle.

The McMaster University GO Bus Terminal, as well as Hamilton – King & Dundurn, King Street West Hamilton, also provide Go Bus services eastward towards Toronto.

The Hwy 407 West GO Bus Service travels weekdays between McMaster and York U, with a stop in Brampton at Bramalea GO, in Mississauga at Square One, and three carpool lots along Hwy 407

Connections to Thornhill, Markham, Scarborough and Pickering can be made at York U.

For those looking to travel by bus to points outside of Hamilton, Greyhound operates a variety of routes including transportation to London, Ingersoll, Woodstock, Paris and Brantford, as well as to Toronto and communities throughout Ontario and e;sewhere. Coach Canada provides service between McMaster and Kitchener, Dundas, and Cambridge.

Burlington Transit’s route #1 bus travels along Plains Road and Fairview Street from the Appleby GO Station to downtown Hamilton, where there is access to the host of Hamilton Transit (HSR) buses.

ViaRail provides passenger train service to areas along the Windsor to Toronto and the Montreal corridor through the Aldershot Station in Burlington Ontario or by taking the Go Train from Hamilton Go Centre to Union Station in Toronto and connecting to the appropriate train.

Roads

Hamilton is easily accessed by highway including the QEW, and Highways 403, 407, 5, 6, 8 and 20. Toronto is about 45 minutes away from Hamilton via Highway 403 and QEW. This route also provides access to Burlington, Oakville and Mississauga. Niagara Falls, Fort Erie and Buffalo can be easily accessed by taking the QEW over the Skyway Bridge to Highway 403.

Looking to head towards London and Windsor? Highway 403 will hook you up with Highway 401 and direct points throughout SouthWestern Ontario.

Air

Whether you are flying a short distance, across Canada or internationally, there is an airport within reach. Hamilton is home to John C. Munro, Hamilton International Airport which provides access to many Canadian, American and Caribbean destinations, Lester B. Pearson International Airport (Toronto International Airport) is about 45 minutes from Hamilton via Highway 403, and provides passenger access to most major North American and overseas destinations.

For those looking for transit service to and from the airport, Airways Transit can provide service to and from Lester B. Pearson International Airport, and Hamilton International Airport.

Hamilton offers an impressive range of health care services. Hamilton Health Sciences is a family of seven unique hospitals, a cancer centre and an urgent care centre, serving residents of Hamilton and south central Ontario. Hamilton Health Sciences is the second largest hospital group in Ontario, and serves as a regional referral centre for cardiac, stroke, burns, trauma, neurosurgery, paediatrics, digestive diseases, high-risk obstetrics, cancer, orthopaedics and rehabilitation services.

Education in Hamilton

Public education for students from kindergarten through high school is available through The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, The Conseil scolaire de district du Centre-Sud-Ouest which provides a French elementary and secondary school, and the Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud which operates a catholic french elementary and secondary school.
