Cambridge

Located in Southern Ontario and nestled along the Grand River, the City of Cambridge was created by the amalgamation of the former City of Galt, the former Towns of Preston and Hespeler and parts of North Dumfries and Waterloo Townships. Cambridge is strategically located in Canada’s Technology Triangle known for its significant number of science and technology companies.

In 2013, Cambridge had an estimated population of 133,000 which continues to grow at a rate just over 1 % each year. Public Transit

Grand River Transit (GRT), operated by the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, provides public transit services in and between the cities of Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo. 85% of GRT buses are wheelchair accessible. Grand River Transit (GRT) operates the specialized transit service MobilityPLUS to provide transit services to those in our community who are unable to physically access conventional GRT bus services.

In addition to the many local routes, GRT operates GRT iXpress routes. These are designed to transport riders along the fastest, most efficient route with fewer stops along the way.

The Ainslie Street Transit Terminal located at 35 Ainslie Street South in the Galt sector of Cambridge, is the hub for many Cambridge-based Grand River Transit routes. A satellite hub is located at the Cambridge Centre Mall Terminal, 355 Hespeler Road (Highway 24), in Cambridge.

Trains & Busses

GO Transit has started running trips to Cambridge and the Waterloo Region. This GO Bus service can be accessed from the Cambridge Smart Centre located at Highway 401 and Hespeler Road.

Greyhound and Coach Canada operate a variety of buses that provide transportation within the Regional area and well beyond. ViaRail passenger train service is available from Kitchener.

Roads

Cambridge is serviced by a well established network of regional and provincial highways. Highways 401, 8 and 24 traverse the City making it easy to travel throughout Southern Ontario and beyond.

Air

Cambridge is about 50 minutes from Toronto’s “Lester B. Pearson International Airport, 25 minutes from Hamilton’s John C. Munro International Airport, and is only a short drive to the Waterloo Regional Airport.

Health Care in Chatham

The health needs of residents can be met through a network of local doctors and clinics, as well as Cambridge Memorial Hospital which offers acute care services such as surgery, emergency care, birthing, women and children’s care, medical care, intensive care, mental health care, full diagnostic services and laboratory services. Cambridge Memorial Hospital is currently undergoing a major new build and renovation that will completely transform and modernize the hospital and add 52 beds.

In addition to Cambridge Memorial Hospital, in nearby Kitchener-Waterloo there are two hospitals (the Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital) which can respond to the diverse health care needs of residents.

Education in Chatham

In Cambridge, education is supplied through the two school boards; the Waterloo Region and Waterloo Catholic District School Boards. There are 40 elementary schools, 7 secondary schools and one catholic adult education school to meet the needs of families moving to Cambridge. Cambridge is also host to a number of private schools that offer varied educational programs to all age groups and include private French language.

For those wishing to pursue their career aspirations or upgrade their skills, Cambridge is home to a number of post secondary institutions. These include the University of Waterloo’s School of Architecture and the Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.

The Cambridge Downtown Campus of Conestoga provides academic upgrading, career-focused programs, LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) classes and continuing education opportunities. The Fountain Street campus in Cambridge is home to Conestoga’s School of Engineering Technology and Trades, as well as its Institute of Food Processing Technology.

THINGS TO DO IN THE CITY

Cambridge is home to more than 1000 acres of parkland, with 96 parks, 140 sports fields, and over 68 kilometres of recreational trails including many along the Grand River. This includes the start of the popular Paris Rail Trail.

Known as the “Ontario Recreation Capital”, Cambridge boasts exceptional organized sporting and leisure activities with ice surfaces, arenas, indoor and outdoor pools and sports fields. Several golf courses are within close driving distance. It is also home to the Galt Arena Gardens, the oldest continuously operating arena in the world.

Cambridge offers a number of options for those who love to shop. With one of the oldest Farmer’s Market in the country, Canada’s largest Antique Market and a modern shopping mall which also includes a year round ice rink, there is lots of shopping to suit everyone.
