Vancouver

Vancouver is consistently named as one of the top five worldwide cities for livability and quality of life. The City of Vancouver is a coastal, seaport city on the mainland of British Columbia. Located on the western half of the Burrard Peninsula, Vancouver is bounded to the north by English Bay and the Burrard Inlet and to the south by the Fraser River.

Public Transit

Vancouver is served by a rich network of travel options where you are free to leave your car behind. Efficient public and private transportation is one of the reasons people choose to live here. TransLink, the regional transportation authority, provides transit services within the City of Vancouver and across the Metro Vancouver region.

Trains & Busses

Rapid transit refers to the automated trains that run above and below ground. SkyTrain consists of the Expo Line and the Millennium Line. A third system called the Canada Line provides the travel from the airport to Downtown Vancouver.

TransLink provides continuous bus service throughout the day. In addition to traditional buses are express lines that make fewer stops, or smaller community shuttles that carry fewer passengers to specific areas of the City.

HandyDART is a door-to-door shared-ride service for people with physical or cognitive disabilities who need assistance to use public transit. Find eligibility requirements and other information on TransLink’s HandyDART website.

The Seabus crosses the Burrard Inlet to provide travel between Waterfront Station in Downtown Vancouver to Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver.

The West Coast Express is a driver-led train that connects Waterfront Station in Downtown Vancouver to Mission, with select stops along the way. On weekdays, five trains travel into Vancouver in the morning, and leave Vancouver in the afternoon.

Roads

The City designs, constructs, and maintains our streets, sidewalks, bridges, and structures for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

Our surveyors, drafters, designers, project coordinators, and engineers work together to balance the needs of all street users, and design accessible streets and sidewalks. By doing this, we help to create a vibrant community experience on our streets.

Our street maintenance and design pays specific attention to minimizing environmental impacts, such as reducing stormwater runoff, and accommodating sustainable modes of transportation.

Air

The Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is located just south of the City. The Canada Line is a convenient rapid transit link between Downtown Vancouver and the airport. Float planes offer additional services from Downtown Vancouver to Vancouver Island, Whistler, the Gulf Islands, and the Sunshine Coast.

Health Care in Vancouver

The City values the health and wellness of all its residents. We provide health clinics, CPR training, and blood pressure and cholesterol screening. Our community centres hold health and wellness classes, and health-related support groups.

Vancouver Coastal Health provides health care services through a network of hospitals, primary care clinics, community health centres and residential care homes.

Education in Vancouver

The Vancouver School Board (VSB) is a large, urban and multicultural school district providing programs to 50,000 students in kindergarten to Grade 12, and to over 2,000 adult students in adult education centres.

The Vancouver School Board has 18 secondary schools, 1 middle school and 89 elementary schools. Our school district ensures the highest quality of learning experiences for all students, with a focus on student engagement, learning and development in a safe, inclusive environment.
