Kingston

Kingston is located in eastern Ontario where Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River and the Cataraqui River meet and where Ontario’s Thousand Islands begin. It is located midway between Montreal and Toronto, and about an hour from Ottawa.

Also known as “the Limestone City”, for its many buildings constructed of limestone, Kingston with its population of over 123,000, consistently ranks as one of the best places to live in Canada.

Kingston blends its historic roots including being home to Canada’s first prime minister, and Canada’s first capital with its natural heritage, and waterfront location to provide a diverse, active and exciting place to live.

Public Transit

Kingston Transit provides conventional bus service within the urban area of the city of Kingston. All buses are accessible and are equipped with bike racks year round. Queens University students can ride the bus free of charge during the academic year by showing their validated student cards.

The Kingston Access Bus provides transit service for persons who have mobility impairments that prevent them from using the accessible Kingston transit service.

Trains & Busses

ViaRail provides direct train service to Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa from the Kingston Train station at 1800 John Counter Blvd.

Coach Canada and Mega Bus provide bus service from Kingston to Brockville, Cornwall, Whitby, Scarborough and Toronto from the Kingston Bus Terminal located at 1175 John Counter Blvd. Greyhound Canada, which also operates from the Kingston Bus Terminal, provides bus service to Ottawa and a variety of locations throughout Ontario and beyond.

For Queens University students, Tricolour Bus, is a Student-run Bus Service that has buses going from Queen’s Campus to and from Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa every weekend from September to March.

Roads

Kingston is located just off Highway 401 providing easy road access east towards Quebec and west towards Toronto.

Air

Kingston is home to the Norman Rogers Airport which is about 15 minutes from downtown Kingston. Kingston Airport provides Air Canada service to and from Toronto.

Shuttle service to Toronto International Airport is available by Coach Canada/Mega Bus from the Kingston Bus Terminal located at 1175 John Counter Blvd. or from a stop at Goodes Hall on the Queen’s Campus.

Health Care in Kingston

Given the proximity to Queens University medical school and as the largest city in SouthEastern Ontario, Kingston is home to a range of first rate medical facilities that service as teaching, research and care facilities.

Kingston General Hospital (KGH) which is located at 76 Stuart Street, in Kingston, is SouthEastern Ontario’s leading centre for complex-acute and specialty care and is home to the Cancer Centre of SouthEastern Ontario. In addition to its regional role, KGH also serves as a community hospital, caring for the less acute needs of the residents of Greater Kingston.

Hotel Dieu Hospital (166 Brock Street, Kingston) is the ambulatory care teaching and research hospital for Kingston and SouthEastern Ontario. As an outpatient care facility it provides medical care or treatment that does not require an overnight stay and that includes services such as specialized clinic visits, day surgeries and diagnostic procedures using advanced technology, equipment or procedures.

Providence Care is SouthEastern Ontario’s leading provider of specialized mental health care, physical medicine and rehabilitation, specialized geriatric services, complex continuing care, palliative care and long-term care. St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital, 340 Union Street; Mental Health Services, 752 King Street West; and Providence Manor, 275 Sydenham Street

For non-life threatening illnesses and injuries, Kingston has an Urgent Care Centre at Hotel Dieu Hospital at 166 Brock Street, as well as a number of walk in-clinics that service the health needs of residents. Education in Kingston

From local public and secondary schools, provided through the Limestone District School Board or Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, to a host of Francophone, Montessori and private schools, there are a range of educational opportunities that address the pre-school, elementary and secondary school needs of children and families living in Kingston

Queens University, one of Canada’s oldest degree-granting institutions, offers a wide range of academic opportunities at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels. Queens is internationally recognized for its business, health sciences faculties (encompassing the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Rehabilitation Therapy), law and science faculties and has extensive research laboratories that pursue subjects such as fuel cells, alternative energies, robotics, cancer research, and biotechnology.

Kingston is also home to the Royal Military College which has been providing education and training for careers in the Canadian armed forces for over 100 years.

St. Lawrence College offers more than 70 academic programs in applied arts, business, engineering technology, health sciences and skilled trades on a fall-time, part-time or continuing education basis. St. Lawrence College also offers a wide variety of general interest courses.

Visit Fort Henry, the Bellevue House National Historic Site (the home of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first prime minister), the Pump House Steam Museum (one of Canada’s oldest original water works), and even the Penitentiary Museum which provides a history of Canada’s Federal penitentiary system. And there is more. Kingston is Canada’s museum capital with something for everyone at its 25 museums and historic sites and three art galleries.

Are music, concerts, dance and theatre more your style?

Then make sure you check out the Kingston Symphony Orchestra and what’s happening at The Grand Theatre, the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing, The Rogers K-ROCK Centre which hosts concerts, sporting events, family events, and Kingston Frontenacs hockey games, as well as the cultural scene the Agnes Etherington Art Centre.

As a waterfront community, Kingston also boasts lots of opportunities for outdoor sports such as sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, swimming, cycling, running or just going for a walk. While you are by the waterfront there’s lots of opportunities downtown for shopping, dining or even visiting the Kingston Market, one of the oldest markets in Ontario.
