Guelph

Situated in southern Ontario, about one hour from Toronto and 20 minutes from Kitchener and Waterloo, Guelph, which is nick-named “The Royal City”, is a growing and vibrant community of over 121,000.

Guelph provides a balance between city life and small town friendliness. Guelph’s industrial base which includes agri-food, life science, IT, environmental enterprises, automotive and advanced high-technology industries is balanced against a community with a rich architectural heritage, lots of green spaces, a varied cultural life and an assortment of festivals.

Public Transit

Want to get around Guelph? Don’t have a car? Guelph Transit provides local bus service through the City. All conventional buses are equipped with a bike rack and Guelph Transit’s full fleet of low-floor buses provide accessible service to all its bus routes operating.

Accessible bus service is also available through Mobility Services, a specialized shared-ride transit service that provides accessible transportation within the city limits of Guelph. Service is provided on wheelchair accessible buses and, when needed, contracted taxi services.

Trains & Busses

Guelph is serviced by both GO Transit Trains and buses. Access to GO Trains is through the Guelph Central GO Station at 79 Carden Street. GO buses can be accessed through either the Guelph Central GO station or at the University of Guelph Bus Stop at 50 Stone Road East. Service is provided to Georgetown, Brampton, Mississauga, York Region and Toronto.

For those looking to travel by bus to points outside of Guelph, Greyhound operates a variety of routes that provide transportation to Toronto and communities throughout Ontario, as well as to destinations in the United States. Coach Canada – Runs regular service to the Niagara Peninsula,( St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Buffalo, NY) stopping to pick up passengers at the bus terminal downtown, at Gordon & College and at the UC Loop at the University of Guelph.

Through ABOUTOWN – Northlink, daily bus service runs from both the downtown terminal and the U of G University Centre, to MacMaster University and the Hamilton GO Terminal.

Elliott Coach Lines (Fergus) Ltd. offers weekday commuter bus service from Guelph to Elora and Fergus.

ViaRail provides passenger train service to areas along the Windsor to Toronto and the Montreal corridor.

Roads

Guelph is served by four major highways: the MacDonald Cartier Freeway (Highway 401) and Highways #6, 7 and 124.

Highway 401, which is a ten minute drive from downtown Guelph, provides direct access to London/Windsor/Detroit to the west and Toronto/Montreal to the east. Highway #6 provides access to the Queen Elizabeth Way which connects with Hamilton, Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga, Toronto and Niagara Falls.

Air

Whether you are flying a short distance, across Canada or internationally, there is an airport within reach.

Waterloo Regional Airport, which is about 20 km from Guelph, provides passenger service to many major Canadian destinations, as well as to many small Ontario locations.

John C. Munroe Hamilton International Airport, located 37 kilometres from Guelph offers passenger service to many North American, as well as select overseas destinations.

Lester B. Pearson International Airport (Toronto International Airport) is about 65 kilometres from Guelph via Highway #401, and provides passenger access to most major North American and overseas destinations.

Health Care in Guelph

In Guelph, there are a number of facilities that can meet healthcare needs. Guelph General Hospital (115 Delhi Street, Guelph) is a 182 bed facility that provides 24-hour emergency coverage, advanced technology and diagnostic support, and specialty programs such as being the Regional provider for general vascular surgery and a designated Provincial Centre of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery. St. Joseph’s Health Centre takes up where acute hospital care ends, by providing residential long-term care, complex continuing care, and rehabilitation.

You can register with the Health Care Connect program who works with local physicians and other providers to help link people in need of a primary care provider. If you are a student attending the University of Guelph, Health Services can provide access to physicians and a host of medical services.

Education in Guelph

For families with children elementary and secondary school education is provided through the Upper Grand District School Board and the Wellington Catholic District School Board. French Immersion programs and preschool facilities, academic, nursery and kindergarten, are also available.

Guelph is home to the University of Guelph, one of Canada’s leading Universities and an internationally recognized academic institution. U of G focuses on research and studies relating to the Biological and Physical Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, Engineering, Arts and Social Sciences, as well as a host of applied and professional programs.

Conestoga’s Guelph Campus, located in the northwest end of the city, is becoming a provincial leader in education and training for the motive power trades, including automotive, truck and coach, heavy equipment, recreational vehicles and motorcycles. The campus also provides business-oriented programs, including Business Foundations, General Business and Office Administration, as well as academic upgrading and career-focused programs.

THINGS TO DO IN THE CITY

From cultural events to a host of outdoor activities, Guelph has something for everyone. The River Run Centre, the city’s performing arts centre, hosts a variety of series and shows ranging from theatre to dance, comedy to lectures and a wide range of vocal and instrumental music. Other cultural venues include the Guelph Little Theatre, The MacDonald-Stewart Art Centre, The Guelph Civic Museum, McCrae House and the Sleeman Centre, which is also home of the Ontario Hockey League’s Guelph Storm.

These cultural activities and numerous cultural festivals share the city with golf courses, nature trails and conservation areas. There are over 1,000 hectares of parks and open space and a 70 km network of trails throughout the city. You can canoe or paddleboat on the Speed or Eramosa Rivers, visit one of Canada’s largest mechanical floral clocks at Riverside Park, go hiking, biking or running, enjoy walking with your dog in one of the many leash free parks or one of the many playgrounds for children.
